Young talents enthral at Carnatic musical soiree

Trivandrum NJ Nandini, the first runner-up at the Carnatic music competition telecast on a private TV channel in February 2011, had come all the way from Trivandrum to Navi Mumbai to perform at a programme organised by Vashi Fine Arts Society (VFAS) on Saturday at Kannada Sangha Hall in Vashi.


It was attended by a packed house of spectators who were mesmerised by the display of young talent.
Nandini hails from a family of rich musical heritage in Trivandrum. She is the granddaughter of Prof Vechur Harihara Subramania Iyer and the niece of Vechur C Sankar. Nandini has also won the grand finale of the Carnatic music reality show ‘Ragaratnam Yuva’ telecast by another channel and has been conferred the title of ‘Ragaratnam’ in October 2009. Nandini is a disciple of Prof Parassala B Ponnammal, Prof PR Kumarkerala Varma, Dr S Bhagyalekshmy and Dr MN Moorthy.


Nandini began the concert with a composition set in Raga Nattai followed by a composition (Nannu Brova) in Raga Abhogi. Next composition, Kanaana Ruchira in Raga Varali was detailed with Niraval and the much sought after Thani Avarthanam (solo of mridangam and ghatam) was in the raga Bhairavi which was followed by a piece in Kurinji raga and followed by a Viruttam in Hamsanandi and Ragamnalika. The concert concluded with a Thillana (Tarana) with composition of Lalgudi Jayaraman in raga Basanti.


Nandini was accompanied by Thiruvizhah Viju S Anand on violin, K Jayakrishnan on mridangam and Vellantanjoor Sreejith on ghatam. These artists are masters in their respective fields too. Viju S Anand is one of the most sought after young violinist in Kerala and is the disciple of his father Thiruvizhah Sivandan and Nedumangad Sivandan. He is an ‘A’ grade artist of All India Radio. K Jayakrishnan is an established senior mridangist, who has accompanied almost all the veteran musicians in the field. He is also an ‘A’ grade staff artist in All India Radio, Trichur. He is the disciple of Palghat TR Rajamani (son of Palghat Mani Iyer) and Palghat Seshamani. He was recently honoured with the Kerala State Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award for Mridangam.


The concert was well received by the audience. “The performance went off very well. Right from their very first piece, the audiences were applauding. Nandini was honoured to see the adulation showered on her,” said Mohana Iyer, Joint Secretary of VFAS.
